Mixed Precipitation Begins Early Wednesday

LAST UPDATED: 4:15 PM EDT, March 29 2022

A low-pressure system will move into the region early Wednesday morning, bringing mixed precipitation, including freezing rain, ice pellets, rain and snow. The system will continue to move through the area throughout Wednesday and into Thursday.

The precipitation will begin in the Windsor area around 2 AM Wednesday, which will begin as rain before transitioning to a mix of ice pellets and freezing rain, then to freezing rain for multiple hours. For many areas, rain is expected following the freezing rain.

The freezing rain will continue to move east, lasting 2-3 hours in most areas. Most areas across the region will see Trace to 2 mm of freezing rain, while areas closer to Windsor, Sarnia, London, Goderich, Shelburne, Barrie and Huntsville will see 2 to 4 mm. Areas such as Wiarton, Tobermory, Midland and Parry Sound will likely see 4 to 6 mm of freezing rain, where it is expected for a longer duration.

Although minimal ice accretion is expected across most of the region where Trace to 2 mm is expected, please remember that it does not take much ice to make road conditions dangerous. Caution is advised for the morning commute on Wednesday.

Further to the east, a quick burst of snowfall is expected. Trace to 5 cm is expected throughout the Parry Sound, Huntsville, Bancroft, Brockville, Cornwall and Ottawa areas. Although minimal snowfall is expected, the snow paired with the freezing rain may create hazardous road conditions.

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for all of Southern Ontario, advising for snow, ice pellets and freezing rain.
