STORM CENTRE: High Risk for Severe Weather Thursday

There will be a High risk for severe weather this afternoon and evening, with the most severe thunderstorms expected in Eastern and Central Ontario.


With the hot and humid temperatures occurring across the region, the environment will become favourable for severe weather this afternoon and evening. The highest risk will be within the High risk area, which includes Parry Sound, Huntsville, Bracebridge, Bancroft, Barry's Bay, Algonquin Park, and Orillia. Threats in these areas will include heavy rainfall of 60 to 80 mm, the risk for one or two tornadoes, wind gusts of 120 km/h or greater, and hail 3 to 4 cm in diameter.


Additional risks will exist across the rest of the region, within the Moderate and Elevated risk categories. The lowest risk will be in the Low risk category which includes the Niagara region.


High Risk

Locations: Algonquin Park, Bancroft, Barry's Bay, Bracebridge, Huntsville, Midland, Orillia, and Parry Sound.

Threats: Heavy rainfall of 60 to 80 mm, the risk for one or two tornadoes, wind gusts of 120 km/h or greater, and hail 3 to 4 cm in diameter.


Moderate Risk

Locations: Barrie, Hanover, Kincardine, Newmarket, Orangeville, Ottawa, Owen Sound, Peterborough, Port Elgin, and Tobermory.

Threats: Heavy rainfall of 60 to 80 mm, the risk for an isolated tornado, wind gusts up to 110 km/h, and hail 3 to 4 cm in diameter.


Elevated Risk

Locations: Belleville, Brantford, Brockville, Chatham, Cornwall, Goderich, Hamilton, Kingston, Kitchener, Listowel, London, Oakville, Oshawa, Sarnia, St. Thomas, Stratford, Toronto, Windsor, and Woodstock.

Threats: Heavy rainfall of 40 to 60 mm, the risk for an isolated tornado, wind gusts up to 100 km/h, and hail 2 to 3 cm in diameter.


Low Risk

Locations: Fort Erie, Niagara Falls, Simcoe, St. Catharines, and Welland.

Threats: Heavy rainfall of 40 to 60 mm, wind gusts up to 90 km/h, and a low risk for small hail..


As of 10:35 AM, Tornado Watches and Severe Thunderstorm Watches have been issued by Environment Canada.
