Discussion
Winter will pack a punch the next few days in Southern Ontario, as a cold front will cause temperatures to fall quickly during the day on Wednesday. Rain will begin Wednesday morning prior to transitioning to snow with the drop in temperature.
Strong wind gusts will also develop, with much of the area seeing wind gusts over 70 km/h. Some areas along the Lake Erie shoreline will likely see wind gusts over 100 km/h, including Fort Erie, Long Point, Dunnville and Port Colborne. Power outages will be possible. The winds will remain strong until late Thursday when they begin to ease.
As snow squalls develop off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay early Thursday morning, conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly for the affected areas. The most affected areas are expected to include Amberley, Drayton, Hanover, Listowel, Kincardine, Mount Forest, Teeswater and Tiverton, where 25 to 50 centimetres of snow is expected.
In combination with the strong wind gusts, these snow squalls are expected to cause extensive blowing and drifting snow, creating whiteout conditions. Some thundersnow will be possible, along with snowfall rates between 5 to 10 centimetres per hour. Road closures and difficult travel conditions are expected. The most affected highways will be Highway 6, Highway 9, Highway 10, Highway 21, Highway 23, Highway 26 and Highway 89. Additional impacts will be possible for Highway 7, Highway 8, Highway 11, Highway 12 and Highway 400.
In addition to the other impacts, the strong wind gusts are expected to create waves of 8 to 12 feet (roughly 2.5 to 3.6 metres) through the day Wednesday and into Thursday. Gale Warnings are in effect. The western portions of Lake Erie will likely see much lower water levels as the water is pushed into the eastern portions of the lake.
The snow squalls are expected to continue through Saturday for some areas.
