Discussion

After significant snowfall has affected Central Ontario and caused poor travel conditions, snow squalls have shifted and are now affecting Midwestern Ontario.

These snow squalls are expected to shift again later tonight, coming off Lake Huron and affecting areas from Goderich to London. There will likely also be snow squalls that develop off Georgian Bay and affect areas between Owen Sound and Collingwood.

The hardest hit areas are expected to be portions of Huron and Perth counties, including Goderich and Listowel, which may see up to 50 centimetres of snow or greater. Local snowfall amounts will vary due to the nature of snow squalls. Trace amounts are expected through much of the GTA and Niagara region.

Heavy snow with snowfall rates near 10 centimetres will be possible. Travel conditions will rapidly deteriorate, especially along Highway 4, Highway 8, Highway 9, Highway 21, Highway 23 and Highway 26. Portions of Highway 3, Highway 400 and Highway 401 will likely be affected as well. Travel should be avoided in these areas and road closures are expected.

The snow squalls are expected to begin weakening Tuesday into Wednesday before system moves into the region.
